Maria Chiara Argirò is a London- based pianist/keyboard player/composer.
Straight after finishing a BA Jazz at Middlesex University, she started touring from June 2013 with the British artrock band These New Puritans for the “Field of Reeds” and “Spitting Stars” tour playing in Asia, USA, Mexico, Europe in festivals around the world and in venues such as the Barbican in London or The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles supporting Bjork.
She has performed, recorded and worked among other artists with These New Puritans, BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards nominated singer Coco Mbassi from Cameroon, Barns Courtney, Synergy Vocals, Heritage Orchestra, Stargaze Ensamble, Hungarian songwriter/producer Vera Jonas, multi-awarded guitar player Marton Fenyvesi, singer/guitarist Adedeji Adetayo, modern jazz group Blam! Quartet, large soul-jazz group Teotima Ensemble, Kinkajous, Liran Donin's 1000 Boats, Mimika Ensemble, soul group Ephemerals, multi instrumentalist duo In a Sleeping Mood, experimental rock/jazz/avant-garde band Circuit, Oberon King Project, Tal Janes Quartet, Serge Ngando Quartet, Camilo Menjura Project, Captain of the Awesome Machine, Davide Basso Quartet, Soul Funktion, Pure Brass Quintet, La Clave Con Mezcal within clubs, venues and studios (such as Abbey Road Studios and Maida Vale BBC Studios) in London and festivals around UK, Europe, USA and Asia.
She’s experienced as leader of bands, composer, arranger, session musician and teacher.
With her own quintet she's has been touring in Italy and France and playing at The EFG London Jazz Festival.
The debut album The Fall Dance, has been released by Odradek Records in November 2016. The launch campaign included a sold out shows at The Vortex Jazz Club and a 2017 UK tour with the support of the Arts Council England including another sold out concert at Pizza Express Jazz Club.
Born in Rome, Italy, she started being interested in music at a very early age singing in “Clara Schumann” Choir then playing piano (her beloved instrument) with Anna Bellantoni, Paolo Cintio and attending in few years several workshops with Barry Harris, Fabrizia Barresi, Antonello Sorrentino, Roberto Nicoletti, Alessandro Paternesi and Maddalena Deodato. In search of rhythmical ideas, she started playing also African percussions (Djambè- doun- doun) in different bands lead by Sena M’Baye, Lamine M’Baye and Ady Thioune. In the meantime she graduated cum laude Bachelor Degree in History, Science and Technique of Music (Ethnomusicology) at “Tor Vergata University of Rome”, also playing with the University Jazz Ensemble.
Thanks to her enthusiasm, aiming to experience music in all its styles, in 2009 Maria Chiara moved to London studying for a year at the London Centre of Contemporary Music with Roland Perrin, Mike Drinkwater, Sid Gauld, Roberto Pla, Dave O’Higgins, Julian Burdock, Pat Cotton, Anna Stubbs, Gary Poole, Liz Tillotson. She also attended several masterclasses with Dave Holland, Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Ross, Eric Alexander and Michel Camilo. Revealing from the first steps her deep sense of musicality she has generously and passionately collaborated with loads of musicians.
In 2013 she graduated in BA Jazz at Middlesex University studying with Nikki Iles, Gareth Williams, Chris Batchelor, Rob Townsend, Stuart Hall. Her curiosity and challenge to improve and learn jazz in all its details brought her to take also private piano lessons with Tim Lapthorn.
